Wind and Willow Installation at Aberjazz Festival 2007

August 2007

Crossing Oceans

Artists Statement:

Inspired by my fascination with the ocean;

The ever-changing movement of the sea,
the multi faceted liquid jewel of blues greens and grey,
and elusive efferfescent sparkling white.

Watching the ebb and the flow,
the creation and demise of each and every wave,
all at the mercy of wind and tide.

Illuminated by the sun’s rays, or the moon- light
an enigmatic unpredictable glimmering surface.

My experience of silently sailing at night, through silken inky waters,
observing the ocean become a mysterious and compelling spiritual playground.
Sight and mind play tricks, seeing is no longer believing,
and the fragility of our perception exposed.

The installation is structured by willow poles, which gently move in sympathy with the wind, as if in a tidal flow.

The flimsy organza flags accentuate this movement, and as a group re-create the ocean, receptive to each gust of wind, carried in a tidal-wave of liquid colour.

Traditionally flags symbolise identity, and in Tibet represent prayers. Here the intention is anonymity by their translucence, and spirituality in their ethereal flight.

The flags when seen at night become eerie, soulful, disquieting, as their shadowy movement suggests an unknown source of movement and mysterious identity.
